lesson 9: ancestery geneology and history

I searched myself and at first I found nothing about me, Mara Marie Hysell. I then searched Mara Marie Hysell and also found nothing. I relooked about Mara Reed and was given info about Marie Reed but no Mara Reed.

I was able to find my grandmother. This may be due to her passing away in 2004. I did not enjoy being in Ancestry Library.

When looking up South Dakota I was given a lot of choices. Few which had much to do with South Dakota. I was able to learn about other states, but why would I want to go threw all the hassle if I wanted to look for something.

Overall, I was dissappointed in Ancestry Library. Too many options, none of which were relevant to me or my subject.

On Heritage Quest I looked up my name, Hysell, and came up with 4 hits. I clicked on the request form and was given the PER SI order form. I'm not sure where it goes after that.

On Sanbourn maps I looked up Bridgewater. I saw saw that they had a dance hall along with other things the town no longer has. If the Post Office hasn't moved they still had one in 1928. The school had changed. It is now connected with the gym and not seperate. I was not able to find when that occured.

Lesson 8: Learning Express

I found this site very interesting. Due to just enrolling in college for graduate courses I came upon some of these terms that I had never heard before. This would be very helpfull for students.

When viewing the test results I used 2 different tests. I tried to actually take the GRE and then I took the 4th grade FCAT. I liked both tests in their approach. The GRE test did not make me feel dumb even if my answers were wrong and the FCAT did a good job of explaining the answers so you could understand them.

I then clicked on Job interviews that get you hired after I found the right page to access ebooks. It is very cut-and-dry, to the point and a good informative piece that would help. No artwork, and it tells you usefull information.

Lesson 6: Worldcat

I looked for Rocket Boys. Found 1752 hits. Mitchell pub. Library was #1. The call number is LC: TL789.85.H53; Dewey: 629.1/092/273; You then can search using the same title and author or just author. You can break it down even more and break it down by subjects, material types.
I searched molt migration by giant Canada geese in eastern South Dakota. OAIster was interesting once I figured it out, problem is that it was hard to figure out how to get there. It is informative when you get there, and I enjoyed the matter of factness of the type.

Lesson 7: Camio and Archivegrid

I researched Sitting Bull . The first time I searched I left the quotation marks off. There wree 16 entries, but only one that fit the criteria of Sitting Bull. Then I did it with quotes on. It gave me the one. I clicked on the one and found a brief summery about Sitting Bull and where to find it, it also tells you what the collection covers.

I then searched midwives. I had a hard time finding any info. about midwives in SD, so I broadened it to just midwives. I did not find information for current events, but found a lot about midwives in general. It did not have a link to click on to find more info. just an area but no actual address or website. My observation is that it would be hard to find information.

This was interesting. I was unaware that Paul Revere was an artist other than in the litery sense. He did sugar urn, coffee urns, tea urns, a spoon, a coulple of bowls, a tea pot, and a salver. I am unaware what a salver is.
After searching Sioux I was thankfull for where I live. They showed costume, jewlery and art work of the Sioux. We living around Freeman can view these things firsthand at the Academy's Museum.
I chose tatting for my subject. I only had 2 choices so I added stitching. I chose 4 and made a slideshow. The picture defination was great. I could see the stitching and the brushstrokes and the detail of the pictures. I liked that it told you where the pictures came from.

Netlibrary: Discovery Exercise part 1: Lesson 5

I researched conservative farming. I then clicked on Leave the Dishes in the Sink by Alison Comish Thorne. The print was easy to read. It had a nice layout and explained well the subject.
I searched fitness. I liked the links on the left. They were helpfull to get the information more exactly to what I wanted. The pictures and captions are nice and explain everything well. I would recommend The Winter Athletes by Steve Ilg
I typed in Nebraska, then clicked on The Art of War and Newspapermen by Frederick Remington. This was a short summery. I liked the fact that it gave you a summery and not the whole article.

Gale Virtual Refrence Library: Lesson 4

I chose to researce abatement. This would be very usefull for a student . I then searched water pollution control. With the amount of newer farmers trying to make their use greener I felt this may be a search widely used because it describes how water run off may be cleaned and what can be done to prevent contaminated runoff.
I looked up minerals to find what foods have zinc in them. There was a link to click on at the bottom of the screen on zinc. It didn'tgive me any info. on types of food that have zink so I researched it.It brought me to an article labeled Nutrition. This gave me a little more but no foods were pin pointed that had zinc in them. I then searched food with zinc. This gave me a lot more. I found that most foods have zinc. Foods that are processed, over cooked have less zinc and other minerals in them. Whole foods such as whole breads, fresh fruit and vegtables also will help you with zinc. What you eat will aid in absorption in zinc. Because zinc is a fatty mineral it stays in your body longer.
The read to me was very interesting and I liked it.

Lesson 3 Proquest

We were asked to look up an area of intrest. I chose to look up foster of pets. Proquest gave me many choices to choose from. Some have video and other things to watch . I liked the option of klicking in some of the sidebars for similiar stories.
I did a search on Sociological methods. This was not a full text. It went on to give you more info. From 2/ 1996 to 11/ 2009.
If I was doing a research paper this would be great. I'm not so it is over whelming. I would be esasy to find info when you click on the highlighted areas and the information is short and to the point.
