SIRS discoverer Lesson 2

There were a couple of pictures of White, he was scateboarding in a few. The reading level was high school. I got the overall impression that it was a school report. Nothing seemed new to me except his age at his career start. I did like the definitions for certain words and the pop quiz at the bottom of the page.

for the next selection I chose Iceland. Was given a brief summery of the island, it's goverment, and the norms of the people.

For maps of the world I chose Brazil. The screen was a map of Brazil subdivided into states? with numbers. There was a box in the map that told you what the numbers were for. I liked the link about Fun Facts about Brazil. This map would be usefull if you had to locate a certain area to find the name, location and some interesting facts about it.

I clicked on Biographies and then clicked on N . Picked the name Nadar, Ralph. Discovered he was a presidental canidate that supported the green ticket. A nice short summary about him.

I then did a search on animal welfare. I knew some of the abuse in China and Middle East but the info on debarking floored me. At first the amount of info was extreme but I found that you could get more selective and limit the amount by picking where the info came from. Newsprint, web...
For a subject to search I chose dogs. Upon clicking on dogs I pulled up a large amount of info. I now know that the Amereican Kennel Club is going to start recognizing mutts as a breed in shows against other mutts and I found this funy. I liked what ws stated about the kennel club trying to help people not buy dogs from puppy mills and how having papers helps that.

Lesson 1c: World Book Foreign Language Edition

The visual dictionary was interesting. I was on the spanish end of it. I wish there was sound so I could hear it instead of just reading it, I did like that you could transfer from Spanish to English easily.
In listening on the slow setting I was able to follow. I wish there was a tool bar so if you wanted to stop you could. Due to our growing number of Spanish speaking patrons I do feel that this would be a good thing. I am not aware, but due to our colonies we have a large number of German speaking clients and I was wondering if they also had this in German?

Lesson: 1b Mammals and Germany

When I clicked on mammals I discovered information about many types of mammals and what makes them mammals. I tried to click on Kitti's hog-nosed bat. All the site gave me was the same picture in the summery.
On Info Finder I again tried to click on Kitti's hog-nosed bat but unlike World book Kids, IF gave me 2 options to click on, I clicked on mammals and was given a large amount of information. Fairly detailed information, but not too detailed. I think it would be good for a student looking for info on bats and mammals.
For the third question I chose Germany. I feel the coat of arms, flag, and maps of Germany would be well liked by certain people. The links on the right side that went into detail about information you could find out on Germany wuld be widely used also.

Lesson 1a: guineapigs

I chose to do a blog about guineapigs because I have a feelinga that we will own one in the future. I liked the ease of finding any information about the guineapigs. I learned that they are like squirrels and other rodents. They dig burrows in the wild in South America. Pets live in cages with water. The picture was nice and cute like.
The next quest had us contrasting world book kids vs. world book student. WBK is geared for younger students and structure length shows this. The wording shows this, but does not make you feel dumb. WBS was more detailed and went more into depth about hthe subject. WBK told you about guinea pigs. Short and simple. WBS tells you a little more. For instance WBK tells you that wild guineas burrow in the ground, WBS also tells you about the landscape.
I researched the Netherlands. I learned more from this site than I previously knew. The ease of the site would be a big help with patrons and all the info available about the subject is handy.
Next we went to World Book Discover, I liked the ease of double clicking to find a definition of a word and the pictures are handy. I think the pictures would be helpfull if a person was having a hard time reading the print. The drop down of an assortment of languages would be good if English is not the native language.
